Sunday Snapshots: Birthday Edition

This year held another great birthday for me! Breakfast, presents, goodies, and endless coffee- what more could a girl ask for? Here are some snapshots of my day.

I started off the day the best way I know how: breakfast out at Mary Ann’s with my brother. This retro diner is one of the highlights of my town, and is known around NH for making a great breakfast. There’s nothing quite like starting the day off with homestyle food and endless coffee.

Next up was a stop at my local bakery with a friend for goodies and (of course) another cup of coffee. You can see here I wore the velvet, leather, and tulle dress from this post with gold accessories. I can never turn down a bustier and a tutu!

Black Forrest cupcake with raspberry filling, need I say more?

I’ve been waiting for the Christian Siriano Fall Collection for Payless to come into stock since February. This month they finally came in and sold out in my size in less than an hour. Very, very fortunately for me, my friend managed to snag these for me before they ran out! And let’s be honest, in the words of Christian, they are so fierce.

I finished up the day with a tea party and some homemade cake with three of my closest and oldest friends. It was so nice that we all got to come together another time before we leave for school.

All in all it was another perfect birthday! Thank you to everyone who helped make my day special.

I couldn’t resist using the fairytale landscape at Kasteel Well to my advantage. The grounds of the castle were incredibly beautiful and with this pink tulle dress and a floral headband, I felt just like a fairy.

Sour Cherry

I always listen to music during my commute and one of my favorite songs to listen to is Sour Cherry” by the Kills. It gives me an extra boost of confidence as I go about my day. The girl I imagine when I hear that song is a little bit rock and roll, and this outfit is something I think she would wear.

Pumped Up Kicks

I’m normally more comfortable in heels and a skirt than in a sweatshirt and sneakers. But when I saw these gold velcro beauties at Fetysh Shoes and Accessories, I couldn’t resist. I paired them with leather shorts, a throwback sweatshirt, and a beanie for a fun, casual ensemble.

pumpedupkicks3

My sweatshirt says “Fancy Lady,” because what other kind of woman could pull off shoes as incredible as these?

pumpedupkicks

Fetysh Shoes has an incredible selection of heels, flats, and boots. They specialize in stand-out styles that are sure to get you noticed. Even better, they offer a shoe party service. Think tupperware party except with stilettos. So, a tupperware party except actually fun.

pumpedupkicks2

What I love about Fetysh Shoes is that they don’t restock. It’s a one-time deal, like a sample sale. That way not everyone in Boston is walking around with the same shoes as you. And let’s be honest, there’s really nothing more embarrassing than that.

I’m so tired of these endless New England snow storms. February is always the worst month to get through because there’s no clear end in sight. Fortunately, this jewel tone sweater adds some extra warmth and style to even my most miserable winter days.

Multi-Tasker

Between going to school, running a magazine, juggling a social life, and working on the blog, I’m always busy. There are days when I’m out at 9 and not back until the wee hours of the next morning. So it’s very important to me that I find clothes I can wear to multiple events. This outfit took me through a day of class, a performance of Fefu and Her Friends, and a blogger event. The professional, yet trendy vibe lets the outfit transition from day to night easily.

I can’t get enough of the knee high gladiator trend (see here, and here). There’s something so cool about the edgy, warrior-woman vibe these shoes give to an outfit. I paired them with a simple black dress to keep the shoes as a focal point. urbangladiator3 urbangladiatorMajor props to my photo intern, Jenni Heller, for snapping these photos in the 4 minute window I had for shooting. I love a girl who can turn things around quick!

It’s not very often that I go for an all out borrowed-from-the-boys look, but living so close to Fenway has given me a serge of athletic and menswear inspiration. And where better to shoot a tomboy look than at the green monster itself?

homerun4I love boyfriend jeans but they can be hard to style on a small frame like mine. I paired them with a feminine chiffon top and strappy heels for some balance. The leather baseball cap add a bit of much needed edge. And let’s be honest, who can go to Fenway without a baseball hat?

Let It Snow

Winter has finally hit Boston and although I don’t love the -2 temperatures, the snow can be very pretty. We’ve had a few light dustings so far and it’s allowed me to break out some classic winter pieces. This outfit features a vintage mink hat I found at the SoWa Vintage Market. I paired it with a plaid shirt and leather pants for a cozy-meets-edgy vibe.

Freakin’ Fabulous

These incessant blizzards are slowly killing my style. There’s only so much you can wear when you have to climb six mountains and ski across a highway to get to work. The only thing that consoles me is looking back on previous outfits and knowing that, at least at one time, I wore something other than a face full of snow. These amazing shots were taken just one day before the blizzard.

freakinfabulous3Sometimes I just really need to walk around in a fur coat and pretend I’m queen of the earth. It’s great until I start giving orders to people on the street. Note to visitors: Bostonians do not take kindly to orders.

freakinfabulous4

freakinfabulous2Can we just talk about these shoes? Everything I love was balled together and this shoe was the result. Leather, lace-up, gold accents, even a grip for those slippery sidewalks. Marry me.

Laurel DeWitt F/W 2015

For those of you who don’t follow my Twitter or Instagram, I’m currently at New York Fashion Week, previewing trends for Fall/Winter 2015. Last night I had the privilege of viewing Laurel DeWitt’s latest collection. I wasn’t familiar with her work previously but she creates amazing looks out of gold, silver, and black metal. It’s a Cleopatra-meets-chainmail look that I can’t get enough of.

laureldewittf:w2015(6)There was a very ’70s vibe present in a lot of her work with two-piece sets and lots of fringe. I personally couldn’t get enough of the last look, a crinoline-inspired piece with a fitted bustier top and an elaborate headdress and veil.

Team Tolstoy

In case the name didn’t tip you off, this fashion girl is a book nerd. I’m the one you see trudging around with a volume that’s bigger than her, or searching for a new translation in the store. The girl that owns three different copies of the same book because they all have different cover art and paper quality? That’s me. I couldn’t resist buying this shirt because so many people mistake my blog to be “Trends and Toy Story.” And while that is one of Pixar’s greatest works, it’s not the kind of narrative I’m into.

teamtolstoy5My favorite part of this is that most people glance at it and assume it’s a Toy Story shirt, only the people who look closer realize that we’re actually talking patriarchal names with 5+ syllables and a delightful combination of spirituality, political corruption, murder, and love.

teamtolstoy

teamtolstoy3I recommend this strategy for anyone looking to style a graphic tee, pair it with a jacket or blazer to add visual interest and bring in alternative textures to keep the look vibrant. Heels never hurt either, and a statement necklace can be a great way to hide an unflattering crew neck.
